was born 4 May 1812 at Lierstall, Province of the Rhineland, West Germany, the son of
Johann Nicolaus and Anna Maria Catharina (Esper) Diederich. His birth is recorded in the
civil birth register of Virneburg, Province of the Rhineland, and his birth and baptism
are recorded in the baptismal register of St. Remigius Roman Catholic Church at
Retterath,
Province of the Rhineland.
He died 18 August 1874, age 62 years, three months, and 14 days, probably at his farm at
Town of Lawrence, Brown County, Wisconsin. The funeral was probably held at St. Mary's
Catholic Church at DePere, Brown County, and he is buried in Mount Olivet Catholic
Cemetery at DePere. His death is recorded in the death register of St. Mary's Catholic
Church. Also see Brown County death certificates, v. 3, p. 124, no. 370.
He married Anna Clasen 21 November 1837 in a civil ceremony at Virneburg, and on 30
November 1837 in a religious ceremony at St. Remigius Catholic Church at
Retterath.
Witnesses were Bartholomew Klapperich and John Schneider. The marriage is recorded in the
Virneburg civil marriage register and in the marriage register of the church.
Anna Clasen was born 22 June 1814 at Arbach, Province of the Rhineland, the daughter of
Peter and Margaretha (Einig) Clasen. Her birth is recorded in the civil birth register of
Virneburg, and her birth and baptism are recorded in the baptismal register of St.
Remigius Catholic Church at Retterath. She died in June 1879, age 65, probably in the
family farmhouse at Town of Lawrence. The funeral was probably held at St. Mary's Catholic
Church at DePere, and she is buried beside her husband in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery
there.
John Diederich's birth is recorded in the civil birth register of Virneburg under the name
of "Jean Dederich". The civil birth register of Virneburg dates from 1798, when
it was set up by the French after France annexed the territory west of the Rhine. Entry
No. 209 for 1812, translated from the French original, reads:
In the year one thousand eight hundred twelve, on the fourth of May, at nine o'clock in
the morning, appeared before us, burgomaster of Virneburg, Officer of the Civil Register
of the Community of Lierstall, district and municipality of Virneburg, Department of Rhine
and Moselle, Nicolas Diederichs, twenty-eight years old, residing at
Lierstall, farmer,
who exhibited to us a child of male sex, born today, at two o'clock in the morning, to the
declarant by his lawful wife, Marie Espers, to whom he stated to give the given name of
"Jean". The aforementioned declaration and exhibition took place in the presence
of Mathieu Schmitt, forty-six years old, farmer, residing at Mannebach, and of Jean
Houff,
sixty-two years old, farmer, residing at Bereborn, and the father with the witnesses
undersigned together with us, after it had been read out to them.
One can only imagine the inconvenience, to say nothing of the risks, of carrying a newborn
infant son 11 kilometers (about seven miles) across the hills in order to comply with the
French bureaucratic requirements.
John Diederich's baptism is recorded in the register of St. Remigius Catholic Church at
Retterath, a small community about a mile and a half north of Lierstall. Entry No. 20 for
1812 reads:
4th May, born and baptized, Joannes Diederich of Lierstall, of Nicolaus Diederich and
Maria Esper, by Joannes Schuller and Catharina Schaeffer, both of them married.

The baptismal register of the Catholic Church at Retterath contains this entry for the
year 1814 on page 113:
22nd of June, at Arbach was born and baptized Anna Klasen, the legitimate daughter of
Petrus Klasen and Margaretha Einig, married couple. Lifted from the holy baptismal font by
Anna Diederich and Petrus Klasen, both of them single, of Arbach.

As is the case in many European countries today, a German couple was then required to
contract a civil marriage, which could be followed by a church marriage ceremony if they
wished. Entry No. 26 of the Virneburg civil marriage register for 1837 reads:
In the year one thousand eight hundred thirty seven on the 21st twenty first of the month
of November at three o'clock in the afternoon, appeared before me Carl Friedrich Hermes,
burgomaster at Virneburg, Officer of the Civil Register, the bachelor Johann Diederich,
twenty four years old, born at Lierstall, Governmental District Coblenz, a farmer by
profession, residing at Lierstall, Governmental District Coblenz, of age, son of the here
present and consenting Johann Nicolas Diederich, a farmer by Profession, residing at
Lierstall in the Governmental District Coblenz and of the here present and consenting
Maria Espers, farmer's wife by profession, residing at Lierstall in the Governmental
District Coblenz and the virgin, Anna Clasen, twenty two years old, born at
Arbach,
Governmental District Coblenz, and of the here present and consenting Margaretha
Einig,
farmer's wife by profession, residing at Arbach, Governmental District
Coblenz. The same
ones have asked me to contract legally the marriage agreed upon between them.
Since the stipulated publishing of banns of this marriage had really taken place at the
main door of the town hall at Virneburg, namely for the first time on the twelfth, and the
second time on the nineteenth of this present month of November, according to the
publication register at this place, and since the documents concerning this publication
had been publicly posted up, and since there was no opposition against this marriage, to
comply with the said request, I read out the following documents: namely
1. the birth certificate of Johann Diederich, according to which the same one was born at
Lierstall on the fourth of May, eighteen hundred twelve.
2. the birth certificate of Anna Classen, according to which the same one was born at
Arbach, on the twenty second of June, eighteen hundred fourteen.
All this according to Civil Register kept at this burgomaster's office.
And the sixth chapter of the Civil Law dealing with matrimony was read out to them,
whereupon I asked the aforementioned groom, and the aforementioned bride: if they want to
be united in matrimony?
Since each of them separately answered this question affirmatively, I declared in the name
of the law that Johann Diederich and Anna Classen, are legally united in matrimony.
After that, I made this present document in the presence of Johan Schlaesser, thirty seven
years old a farmer by profession, residing at Lierstall, who is an acquaintance of the new
married couple, of Johann Muller, thirty five years old, a farmer by profession, residing
at Virneburg, who is an acquaintance of the new married couple, of Peter Schaefer, fifty
eight years old, a farmer by profession residing at Virneburg, who is an acquaintance of
the new married couple, and of Peter Nett, twenty nine years old, a farmer by profession,
residing at Virneburg, who stated to be an acquaintance of the new married couple; and
these persons present undersigned this document together with myself, after it had been
read out to them, with the exception of the bride, of the groom's mother, of the bride's
parents, and of the witness Peter Schaefer, who are illiterate.
The marriage register of the Catholic Church at Retterath contains this entry for 30
November 1837 on page 17:
The honorable adolescent, Joannes Diederich, the legitimate son of Joannes Nicolaus
Diederich and Maria Esper, married couple of Liersthal, and the chaste virgin, Anna
Classen, the legitimate daughter of Petrus Classen and Margareth Einig, married couple of
Arbach, after no impediment was detected, were united in matrimony, in accordance with the
regulation of the Council of Trent, in the parish church of St. Remigius. Witnesses were:
Bartholomaeus Klapperich at Retterath and Joannes Schneider at Liersthal.

The death register of St. Mary's Catholic Church, DePere, contains this entry in Latin for
the year 1874 on page 30: "Obiit Aug. 18va Joannis Diderich filius Joanie Nicolai et
Annae conj. natus AD 1812." It is signed, W. A. Verboort, pastor. Translated, it
means "Died August 18th, John Diderich, son of John Nicholas and Anna, married. Born
AD 1812." The Reverend W. A. Verboort filed a death certificate at Brown County
Courthouse on 10 September 1875 but the transcription (Brown County Deaths, v. 3, p. 124,
no. 370) contains a number of errors. It reports that John Dideich, farmer, was born 1802
in Germany, died August 18, 1874, age 72 years, at Lawrence, Brown County and is buried in
DePere. His parent's names are given as "John Nic Diderich" and
"Anna". His wife's name is given as "Anna". The inscription on his
gravestone reads, "John Diederich/ Died/ Aug. 18, 1874/ Aged 62 yrs 8 ms/ & 6
d's." Whoever calculated his age at death made an error of almost five months.
The death register of St. Mary Catholic Church contains this entry in Latin for the year
1879 on page 41: "Gertrudis Diederiks (date unreadable) Junii 1879 Sepultis est
conjun Joannis Diedericks aet 64." It is signed by A. Van Grotel, pastor at that
time. Translated, this means, "Gertude Diederiks, wife of John
Diedericks, was taken
away (date unreadable) June 1879, age 64." Why the register gives her name as
"Gertrude" is unknown. Since there was no other widow or wife of a John
Diederich living in Brown County in 1879, it is evident that this entry records Anna
Diederich's death. Unfortunately, her death is not registered in Brown County death
records. That portion of her gravestone which tells the date of her birth and death has
been broken off, and the remaining inscription reads simply, "Anna Diederich/ Wife
of/ John Diederich." There was no obituary. The Wisconsin State Historical Society at
Madison has an excellent collection of Brown county newspapers published during this
period, and these have been searched to no avail. It simply was not customary for those
local newspapers to publish death notices except of very important or wealthy people,
until a few years later.
John Diederich, his wife, Anna, and three children, Gertrude, Peter, and Michael,
emigrated to the United States sometime between 1843 (when Michael was born) and 1847 when
they settled in the Town of Lawrence, Brown County, Wisconsin.
The region from which they came is only 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the Rhine
River city of Koblenz, but even today it is relatively isolated and sparsely populated
because of the poor road network. According to the census of 1883, Lierstall was then a
village of only 212 inhabitants. Other nearby communities include Arbach (149
inhabitants), Bereborn (115 inhabitants), Calenborn (227 inhabitants), Mannebach (231
inhabitants, Oberelz (175 inhabitants), and Retterath (266 inhabitants).
These villages are in the Eifel Mountains, a region bounded on the north, east, and south
by the world-famous rivers and vineyards of the Ahr, Rhine, and Moselle. To the west, the
district passes into the forest of the Ardennes of Belgium and Luxembourg. The savage
beauty of the Eifel is universally renowned as the peculiar mark of its landscape, whether
ablaze with golden blossoming broom in the early spring or when the green foliage of the
woods is reflected in the dark waters of the numerous ancient "maare" or
volcanic lakes.
John Diederich may have left his native home because of the difficulty of earning a living
as a farmer in that forested and hilly land, but family tradition is that he came to
America to escape the draft. The war readiness of the German armies was maintained through
universal military service in which every able-bodied man was required to serve his time.
When and where the family landed in the United States is not known, but on 9 February
1847, John Deitrick (sic) purchased, for $50, two tracts of land in the Town of Lawrence
from Philip Molitor and his wife, Anna. The tracts are 20-acre rectangles, measuring 40 by
80 rods, and the northeast corner of one adjoins the southwest corner of the other. In
Brown County deeds, Books ___, p. 204, the property is described as the North ½ of the
Southeast ¼ and the South ½ of the Southwest ¼ of the Southwest ¼ of Section 20, Town
23, Range 20.
John Diederich built his home on the South ½ of the Southwest ¼, about a mile west of
West DePere. It is close by the road now designated County Trunk EE. The two 20-acre
tracts and buildings were owned by Nell Bolda in 1968 when I visited the farm.
In the censuses of 1850, 1860, and 1870, John Diederich reported his occupation as farmer.
He apparently was successful.
In 1850, he told the census taker that his real property was worth $300. The family was
enumerated as follows:

In 1860, he reported his real property was worth $400, and his personal property was worth
$200.
By 1870, according to the census, his real property was worth $4,000, and his personal
property was worth $900.
In addition to the original 40-acre homestead, John Diederich ultimately acquired two
other tracts. On 6 February 1856, he paid Joseph and Adeline Myers $250 for 51 acres of
land, described in Brown County deeds, Book X, p. 83, as the East Part of the East ½ of
the Southwest ¼ of Section 19, Town 23, Range 20, consisting of a parcel 51 rods wide by
160 rods long running northwesterly. This tract is also in the Town of Lawrence, about a
half-mile west of the first tract, on County Trunk EE. In 1968, it was part of a 104-acre
tract owned by Eugene and Mary Manders.
On 27 April 1869, John added 74¾ acres to his holdings, bringing the total to l65.75
acres. According to Brown County deeds, Book 18, p. 536, Louis Scheuring and his wife,
Mathilda, conveyed to John Diederich for $410 Lots 2 and 3 of Section 36, Town 23, Range
19, containing 74¾ acres more or less. These lots are on the opposite side of DePere and
front on County Trunk GV, a mile and a half east of that city. In 1968, they were owned by
Roger Denis, et al.
When John Diederich died 18 August 1874, he apparently did not leave a will. At least none
is recorded. Thus the property passed into the hands of his widow and children, and they
apparently held it jointly until 1 October 1878, when his widow, Anna Diederich, sold her
dower rights to Anton Deidrich (sic), her son, and Peter Karst for $1,333.34. In addition
to the description of all the various tracts of land, the deed reads, "The interest
intended to be conveyed hereby is my dower rights as the widow of John Deidrich and also
my right as such widow to hold, use, and occupy the homestead as such widow under the laws
of Wisconsin reserving and excepting from such conveyance the sole use and right of
possession and occupation by myself during life of the front room and bedroom off
therefrom in the house now occupied by me and being on the said homestead situate on the
S.W. 20 acres of Section 20 as above conveyed." She signed with her mark. See Brown
County deeds, Book 31, p. 609.
That same day, her daughter "Gertrude Gates and Philip Gates, her husband" sold
their one-eighth share in the estate to Anton Diederich and Peter Karst for $63.26. See
Brown County deeds, Book 31, p. 608.
On 5 March 1879, "Joseph Diedrich and Cecilia Deidrich, his wife" sold their
share to Anton Diedrich and Peter Karst for $150. See Brown County deeds, Book 39, p. 95.
The reason for the substantial difference in the amount of money each received is unknown.
Perhaps there was some other consideration involved which is not mentioned in the deeds.
On 10 March 1880, "Peter Karst and Katherine Karst, his wife, of the Town of
Lawrence" conveyed the interest previously conveyed by Anna Diederich to Anton
Diedrich for $125. By then, Anna Diederich was dead. See Brown County deeds, Book 39, p.
208.
Then on 1 April 1880, "Antoon Diederich and Mary Diederich, his wife, Mathias
Diederich (unmarried), Theresia Pennings (nee Diederich), and John Pennings, her
husband," sold an undivided six-eighths interest in the two 20-acre tracts and the
74¾-acre lots east of DePere to Peter, John and Antoon Keyzers for $900. See Brown County
deeds, Book 42, p. 294. "Mary Diederich of Fillmore County, Nebraska" sold her
one-eighth interest in these properties to the Keyzers on 12 April 1880 for $150. See
Brown County deeds, Book 42, p. 311. Peter Didrich of Miles City, Custer County, Montana,
Territory sold his one-eighth interest to the Keyzers on 19 June 1881 for $464.89. See
Brown County deeds, Book 42, p. 459. Did Peter get more because he held out?
Also on 1 April 1880, "Antoon Diederich & Mary Diederich, his wife, Theresia
Pennings (Nee Diederich), John Pennings, her husband, and Mary Diederich, unmarried,"
sold their six-eighths interest in the 51-acre tract to their brother, Mathias Diederich
of DePere, for $800. See Brown County deeds, Book 42, p. 318. On 9 July 1881,
"Mathias Diedrich of Brown County, Wisconsin" resold the six-eighths interest in
the 51-acre tract back to his brother, "Antoon Deidrich of the same county" for
$800. See Brown County deeds, Book 43, p. 556.
On 26 August 1882, "Antoon Deidrich and Mary Deidrich, his wife, of Brown County,
Wisconsin" conveyed the 51-acre tract to William Michaelis of the same county for
$1,100. See Brown County deeds, Book 47, p. 239. On 21 May 1883, "Peter Diederich of
Fort Benton, Choto County, Montana" sold his one-eighth interest in the 51-acre tract
to "William Michaelis of Town Lawrence" for $100. See Brown County deeds, Book
47, p. 419. Thus, the last of the property acquired by John Diederich passed from the
hands of his heirs.
Census and other records indicate John and Anna Diederich had at least nine children.
Three were born before the family emigrated to the United States, and the other six were
born in Brown County, Wisconsin.
2. i. GERTRUDE5 DIEDERICH, b. 23 October 1838, Arbach, Province of Rhineland, West Germany; d. 11 November 1888, Duck Creek, Brown, County, Wisconsin and is buried in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery at Town of Howard, Brown County.
ii. PETER DIEDERICH, b. 01 May 1840, Arbach, Province of Rhineland, West Germany; d. Aft. 14 August 1891, Probably at Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, Montana. 14 August 1891 is the date on an affidavit filed when he applied for a pension for Civil War service. At the time he filed for the pension, he was living at Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, Montana. He did not receive the pension to which he would seem to have been entitled. Nor is there any evidence that he made any further effort to obtain a pension so he may have died soon thereafter. There is no evidence that he ever married. If he did, his widow never applied for a Civil War widow's pension. Peter Diederich's baptism is recorded in the register of St. Remiguis Catholic church at Retterath which contains this entry for 1 May 1840, translated from Latin: "Petrus Diederich of Arbach. 1st. Born and baptized, Petrus, the legitimate son of Joannes Diederich and of Anna Claasen, married couple at Arbach. Presented at the holy baptismal font by Petrus Michels, married man of Arbach, and Anna Maria Diederich, single, of Liersthal." See Kirchenbuch Retterath, Abt 72/685, no 2, p 49, now preserved in the Bistumsarchiv (diocesan archive) at Trier. Retterath is in the Archdiocese Trier. Peter Diederich came to the United States with his parents sometime between 1843 and 1847. When the 1860 census was taken, he was still living with them on the family farm at Town of Lawrence, Brown county, Wisconsin. His compiled service record, filed in the National Archives at Washington, D. C., shows he enlisted under the name of Peter Diderick as a private in Captain Loy's Company (Company H), 4th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry at Oconto, Oconto County, Wisconsin on 4 June 1861 for three years. In July or August 1863, this unit was redesignated Company H, 4th Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry. The variant spelling of his surname was the result of his inability to read and write and the tendency of recruiting officers to spell foreign names phonetically. The Company muster roll for January-February 1863 shows he was absent because of arrest by the provost marshal at Indian Village, Louisiana and the muster roll for September-October 1863 shows a court martial sentenced him to forfeit $5. No details concerning the offense are given. The Company muster-out roll, dated 10 January 1864 at Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, shows he was discharged 4 January 1864 by virtue of re-enlistment as a veteran volunteer under the provisions of War Department General Order No 191, Series of 1863. He re-enlisted under the name of Peter Didrick as a private in the same company the following day, 5 January 1864, at Baton Rouge. His enlistment contract states that he was then 21 years, 10 months old (which was incorrect), born in Prussia, occupation, lumberman. His physical features are described as: gray eyes, black hair, dark complexion, Height 5 feet, 7 inches. He signed the contract with his mark an "X." Inducement for re-enlistment was a bounty of $402, $62 of which was paid immediately and the balance in quarterly installments of $50 each. The Company muster roll for March-April 1864 lists him as "veteran absent on furlough since 9 April 1864." The Company muster roll for May-June 1864 shows him present again. He was promoted to Corporal on 12 November 1864. The Company muster roll for July-August 1865 lists him as "Absent, sick, in Shreveport, Louisiana." The Company muster rolls for the period September to December 1865 lists him as "Veteran Volunteer absent sick at New Orleans, Louisiana." The Company muster roll for January-February 1866 states he was "discharged at New Orleans, Louisiana, 19 December 1865 by Military Division of the Gulf Special Order No 133, his services being no longer required." He may have returned home after his discharge but he is not recorded in the 1870 Census of Brown County. He was living at Miles City, Custer County, Montana Territory on 19 June 1881 when he signed a deed conveying his one-eighth interest in a portion of the Brown County land inherited from his parents. See Brown County Deed Book 42, p 459. He was living at Fort Benton, Choto County, Montana on 21 May 1883 when he signed a deed conveying his one-eighth interest in the balance of the land he inherited from his parents. See Brown County Deed Book 47, p 419. He was living at Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, Montana on 5 January 1891 when he applied for an invalid pension under the act of 27 June 1890. He swore that he was "the identical Peter Diderick who was enrolled on the 4th day of June 1861 in the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry subsequently Cavalry and was Corporal therein in the service of the United States in the War of the Rebellion, and served at least ninety days, and was honorably discharged at New Orleans on the 19th day of December 1865. That he is partially unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of Physical Disability." He signed the declaration Peter Diderick with a very shaky hand. His signature was attested to by Peter Grosius (who signed with his mark) and C. M. Ennis, both of Anaconda. Grosius said he had known him for 32 years and Ennis said he had known him for one year. On 26 May 1891, "John C. Ruffner, aged 63 years, a resident of anaconda ... and is a miner, and Charles A. Meyer, aged 37 years, a resident of Anaconda ... and is a miner" signed a "Neighbors' Affidavit" that "they have ben well and personally acquainted with Peter Didrick for 5 years, and 4 years, respectively, and that they have worked with him off and on a number of times in mines around Anaconda and in Anaconda. That they have known him to (be) suffering from Piles and have seen him often stop work on that account. They have known him also to be suffering from Rheumatism. That he is a willing and good workman when well but lately has been compelled to give up work on account of the disabilities named. They say that now at this time he is not able to do more the 1/2 days labor and is fully disabled at least one half from what other miners are. That this disability is not the result of vicious habits on his part." On 14 August 1891, Peter dideick signed a geneal affidavit at Anaconda in which he swore that "he has not been employed in the Military or Naval service since the 19th day of Dec 1865." This affidavit was filed at the pension office in Washington on 31 August 1891 and assigned No 982675. Civil War pension files are now kept at the National Archives. There is no evidence in the file that he ever received a pension nor is there any evidence that he made any further effort to obtain one. He may have become discouraged by the bureaucratic red tape or he may have died shortly after signing his last affidavit. We have been unable to find any further record of Peter Diederich.
iii. MICHAEL DIEDERICH, b. 17 December 1843, Arbach, Province of Rhineland, West Germany; d. 20 November 1876, Near West DePere, Brown County, Wisconsin and is buried in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery at De Pere. Michael5 Diederich (John4, Johann Nicolaus3, Cornelius2, Peter1) was born 17 December 1843 at Arbach, Province of the Rhineland, West Germany, the son of John and Anna (Clasen) Diederich. His birth is recorded in _________ records, v ___, no. _____. He was killed by a train on 20 November 1876, age almost 33, near West De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin. The funeral was held ____________________ at ___________ church, _________, and he is buried in Mount Olivet Catholic cemetery at De Pere. His death is recorded in __________________ County death records, v ____, no. _____ and obituaries were published in _____________________. Michael Diederich's baptism is recorded in the register of St. Remigius Catholic church at Retterath which contains this entry for 17 December 1843, translated from the Latin: "Michael Diederich of Arbach, 17th. Born and baptised, Michael, the legitimate son of Joannes Diederich and of Anna Clasen, married couple of Arbach. Lifted from the holy font by Michael Gundert of Liersthal and Gertrude Clasen of Arbach, both of them married." Michael Diederich came to the United States with his parents between 1844 and 1847. He never married. According to the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses, he lived with his parents on their farm at Town of Lawrence, Brown County.
His tragic death was reported in the De Pere News on Saturday 25 November 1876, p 3, as follows: Killed By The Cars.--Early on Monday morning last Michael Diederick, of West De Pere, deliberately put an end to his own exsistence by walking on the railway track of the Chicago & Northwestern, at one of the Lawtonville crossings, as the southern bound passenger train approached the depot. At least this is the generally expressed view of the sad affair, and there appear to be good and sufficient reasons for looking at it in this light. From boyhood Mr. Dedrick has been a hopeless invalid and cripple from inflammatory rheumatism, and at times it is said so great were his pain and suffering as to bereave him of his reason. It is therefore thought that, tiring of his life, he took this means of putting an end to it. He was terribly crushed and mangled and life was not extinct in his remains for some minutes after they were taken up for removal to his home. The poor victim's plan for putting an end to his troubles was well calculated not to miscarry, as at the point he took to carry it out there is a sharp curve as well as a perceptible decline in the track, and the engineer in charge of the train could not, no matter how much he desired to, stop it in time to prevent the execution of the plan. In fairness to Michael, it should be noted that I have been told that he was deaf and crippled and probably did not hear the approaching train as he walked home along the tracks. The story in the newspaper may have been instigated by the railroad company in an effort to forestall a lawsuit.
His death is recorded in the Liber Matrimonii et Defunctorum (marriage and death book) of St. Mary Catholic church at De Pere, p 35, but there is no death certificate in Brown County records. His gravestone reads:

The gravestone inscription would indicate that he was born 15 December 1843 and while it is conceivable that he was not baptized the same day he was born, as the church records indicate, it is more likely that his age at death was incorrectly calculated.

DEATH OF MATT DIEDERICH
Matt Diederich, a resident of the county farm for several years, passed away at that place Saturday morning, after a lingering illness due to the infirmities of old age. Deceased was 79 Years of age at the time of his death. Short funeral services were conducted at the McElravy-Haasl funeral home Monday afternoon, with further services at St. Mary's Catholic church; Father Phillip officiating. Interment was at Riverside cemetery.
During his lifetime, Mathias Diederich travelled through the west and eventually settled at or near Ladysmith. Toward the end of his life, he became a resident of the Rusk County farm.

In the Brown County marriage records his parents' names are given as Peter Pennings and Henrica Van Den Berg and her parents' names are given as John Didericks and Anna Dideriks. Witnesses were Anton Dideriks and Maria Dideriks. According to this record they were married 3 September 1878 in the Roman Catholic church at De Pere by the Reverend H. Van Grotel, who was pastor at the time.
The Liber Matrimonii et Defunctorum (marriage and death book) of St. Mary Catholic church at De Pere contains this entry on p 238, which has been translated from the Latin:
Third September 1878 marriage was initiated between John Pennings, age 25, son of Peter Pennings and Henrica van den Berg, born in Holland, and Therisiai Dideriks, age 21, born in De Pere, daughter of John Dideriks and Anna Dideriks. Gertrude came to the United States with her parents and until her marriage, lived on their parents' farm in Town of Lawrence, Brown County. According to the 1880 census reports, she could neither read nor write.

His birth is recorded in Brown County birth records, v 1, p 459, as Jean Dietrich, son of Jean Dietrich and Ann Classen.
He died 25 December 1930, age 83, of acute myocarditis at Ladysmith, Rusk County, Wisconsin. The funeral was held ___ December 1930 at Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic church at Ladysmith and he is buried in the Catholic section of Riverside cemetery near Ladysmith. See Rusk County death records, v 6, no. 1283. His death certificate tells when and where he died and the cause of his death. His obituary was published in The Ladysmith News on 2 January 1931, p 1.
He married, first, Cecilia Van der Heyden 13 June 1878 [14 June 1875] at St. Mary's Roman Catholic church, De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin. Reverend William DeKelver presided. Witnesses were Nellie Van der Heyden and Mathias Diedricks The marriage is not recorded in the marriage register of the church. The marriage of Jon diedricks (sic) and Cecilia Van der Heyden is recorded in Brown County marriage records, v 8, p 156, and this record provides the names of the priest and the witnesses.
Cecilia Van der Heyden (Celia, Cena, Cina, Youza? Cynthia?) was born 4 February 1856 at Stiles, Oconto County, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Josina (Manders) Van der Heyden. Her parents were living at Stiles when she was born but there is no record of her birth in Oconto County birth records, but her gravestone gives the date of her birth.
She died 22 May 1887, age 31, at De Pere of complications following the birth of her fifth child, George Joseph, on 4 May. The funeral was held ___ May 1887 at, probably, St. Mary's Catholic church at De Pere and she is buried in Mount Olivet Catholic cemetery there, next to her son George Joseph who died the following August, and her husband's parents. There is no record of her death in Brown County death records nor is there any record of her death in the records of St. Mary's Catholic church at De Pere, but her gravestone gives the date of her death.
John William Diederich married, second, Wihelmina Van der Heyden 15 April 1890 at St. Mary's Catholic church, De Pere. She was his first wife's sister. At the time of their marriage, he was 42 years old and she was 21. The Liber Matrimonii et Defunctorum (marriage and death book) of St. Mary's Catholic church at De Pere contains this entry for 1890 on p 264, which has been translated from the Latin: "15 April joined together in matrimony Joannes Diederick and Wilhelminan van der Heiden. Witnesses were Josephus van der Heiden and Nina van der Leest." The entry was signed by the Reverend Joannes Verstegen, pastor at that time. The entry also recited that a dispensation had been granted from the impediment of a collateral relationship in the first degree which existed because of the prior marriage of John Diederich to Wilhelmina's sister. This marriage is also recorded in Brown County marriage records, v 10, p 444.
Wilhelmina Van der Heyden (Minnie) was born 4 September 1868 at Town of Rockland, Brown County, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Josina (Manders) Van der Heyden. See also Brown County birth records, v 2, p 157. Her birth is also recorded in the baptismal register of St. Mary's Catholic church at De Pere, p 60, for 1868, as follows: "Baptized Sept. 4th an infant born today, daughter of Joannis van der heyden and Josina Manders, married. Named Wilhelmina. Sponsors: Joannes Van der Lienden and Catherina Van den berg." It is signed by the Reverend W. A. Verboort, pastor at the time.
Wilhelmina died 21 December 1936, age 68, of acute dilation of the heart and hypertension, at Ladysmith. The funeral was held ___ December 1936 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic church and she is buried next to her husband in Riverside cemetery. Her death is recorded in Rusk County death records, v 7, no. 604 which tells when and where she died and the cause of her death.

John William Diederich, who went by his initials, J. W., grew up on his parents' farm in the Town of Lawrence but was also trained as a carpenter and cabinetmaker.
When his father died in 1874, he inherited a one-eighth undivided interest in the farm. In 1879, he sold his share of the farm and moved his family to Stanton Precinct, Fillmore County, Nebraska to establish a homestead.
The Census reports of Fillmore County for 1880 show that his sister Mary was living in his household and that his brothers Antone and Joseph and their families were nearby neighbors. However, the effort to establish a homestead was not successful. Their home was made of sod, carved from the soil of the prairie. Winters on the open prairie were fiercely cold and windy and the summers were very hot. Swarms of insects ate the crops. His baby daughter Anna, born in January 1880, died in August. J. W. and his brother Antone stayed in Nebraska about two years and then moved back to Brown County, Wisconsin. Their brother Joseph and sister Mary remained in Nebraska, however.
After his first wife Cecilia died and he remarried, J. W. resided for a while at Marshfield, Wisconsin and then for several years at Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
While in Oshkosh, he worked as a carpenter. After construction of the two-story drug store building at the corner of Main and Algoma Streets was completed in the fall of 1899, he had no further work in sight. Arnold Verhyen, an agent for the Hein Land Company and the husband of Jane Van Der Heyden, a sister-in-law, persuaded him to buy a 160-acre farm in the Town of Grow, Rusk County, Wisconsin for $640.
The Hein Land Company had cut the pine off the land but it was not truly cleared since the stumps and the hardwood trees remained. J. W. paid for the land with $300 of his savings and $340 borrowed from Frank Crabb, husband of another sister-in-law, Petronella Van Der Heyden. They moved in October.
At the turn of the century, Ladysmith was named Warner but a man named Smith offered to build a paper mill there if the town were named after his wife. Thus it was renamed
Ladysmith. What was then the community of Deer Tail was similarly renamed Tony -- for Tony Hein. The Diederich farm lay between these two communities -- about three miles from Ladysmith and four miles from Tony.
J. W. Diederich served as chairman of the board of supervisors of the Town of Grow for several years.
Years later, his son Charles, who was four years old when his parents moved to Rusk County, described the first winter. "Dad and Bill (John William, Jr.) built a two-story log house before winter set in. They killed a deer and hung him from a tree limb so the wolves couldn't get at him. We ate off that deer all winter.
"In the Spring, we put in a few acres of turnips and rutabagas on new cleared land. Dad built a school house on Joseph Crabb's land for $800. (Joseph Crabb was a brother of Frank Crabb.)
"Each year we cut wood to pay our taxes and to buy horses, cattle and machinery. We made maple syrup each spring. We ate venison, rabbits, partridge and chicken, pork and usually a steer. We raised potatoes, carrots, onions, peas and beans for the table and corn, barley and oats to feed the stock.
"We had a double row corn planter and cultivator, a McCormick corn-binder and chopper, a burr mill to grind dry grain crops, and two gas engines. John William, Jr., was accidentally killed by a saw rig driven by one of those gas engines.
"We had many large hemlock we sawed into lumber. Some of the large maple was shipped to Minneapolis. Most hardwood was cut into 16" lengths and sold at Ladysmith. I hauled two loads a day on the horse sleigh, generally.
"Saturday, we usually took butter and eggs to market. The Hull & Stelsman store had regular weekly customers who took the butter which mother put into two and three pound rolls. The hotel took any surplus from them.
"In the Spring, leeks tainted the milk unless we kept the cows out of the pasture for a few weeks. We bought a silo and fed silage, hay and grain to them then.
"There was no wagon road through from Tony to Ladysmith so we built one through the swamps using logs, poles, rock and brush, covered with clay and soil from the side ditches we dug for drainage. We called those roads 'corduroys.' They were pretty rough in most places for lumber wagons but when covered with gravel, not too bad. They were good sleigh roads in the winter. Snow was plentiful.
"Quite often, we walked to town on the Soo Line tracks. If we had a heavy load like a sack of sugar, the railroad section foreman would bring it to Campbell's Mill, a spur or siding where the logging road crossed the tracks midway between Ladysmith and Tony."
In 1917, J. W. retired to Ladysmith. He auctioned off his personal property for $4,000 and sold the farm to R. E. Meyers for $8,000. R. E. Meyers paid $3,500 down and gave a mortgage for the balance. Later, E. L. Jay assumed the mortgage but it was never paid off. In 1939, his daughter Theresia Frances (Diederich) Van Horne paid E. L. Jay $500 for a quit-claim deed, paid the delinquent taxes, and took over the farm. She sold in it 1950.
For about two months before his death, J. W. suffered from septic arthritis in his right knee joint. He passed away on Christmas morning in 1930 while his family was attending 5 a.m. mass.
His wife Minnie died a few days before Christmas in 1936. She had walked through snow from her home to the E. L. Jay home, a few blocks away, in a fruitless attempt to collect a some money on the farm mortgage. E. L. Jay refused to pay anything. Angry and frustrated, she began to trudge home through the snow. Her obituary, published on page 1 of the Ladysmith News on 21 December 1936, completes the story: "Monday evening Mrs. Diederich walked to the E. L. Jay home a few blocks away and on the return she felt very tired and stopped at the Harry Strop home to rest. She mentioned the fact that she was tired and immediately afterwards collapsed and was declared dead on the arrival of a physician. Death was attributed to a heart attack, Mrs. Diederich having had a chronic heart ailment for several years." According to her death certificate, she died of "acute dilation of the heart and hypertension."
John William Diederich and his first wife, Cecilia had five children.

His birth is recorded in Brown County birth records, v 1, p 271, as Joseph Dietrich, son of John Dietrich and Anna Klaussen. According to his birth record, he was born at Green Bay but it is more likely that he was born on the family farm at Town of Lawrence.
The date and place of his death and burial were furnished by his daughter, Mrs. Clara Augusta Diederich Heiderstadt. Mrs Heiderstadt is also the source of the information concerning he mother's birth, death and parentage as well as most of the information about their children which she says is taken largely from the old family bible.
The Liber Matrimonii et Defunctorum (marriage and death book) of St. Mary's Roman Catholic church at De Pere contains this entry for 1871 on p 221, which has been translated from the Latin: "Today May 2, marriage was initiated by Joseph Diderich, son of John and Anna Diderich, married, and Anna Osterman, daughter of John Conrad and Elizabeth Prior, married. Witnesses: Dora Verboort and Catherina Devray." The enry was signed by the Reverend W. A. Verboort, pastor at that time. This marriage is also recorded in Brown County marriage records, v 6, p 19. According to this record, Joseph Diederich was born at Town of Lawrence and at the time of his marriage, was a farmer at Town of Lawrence.
Joseph Diederich grew up on his parents' farm and continued to work on the farm after his marriage. After they died, he sold his interest in their land on 5 March 1879, he moved his family to Stanton Precinct, Fillmore County, Nebraska to establish a homestead. The report of the June 1880 Census of Nebraska, p 520D, shows that his brothers Antone and John and their families were nearby neighbors. Although his brothers returned to Wisconsin during 1881, he remained on the homestead until his retirement when he moved to the nearby town of Geneva.
The Diederichs had seven children.

Mary Ann Diederich's birth is recorded in Brown County birth records, v 1, p 328, as Mary Dietriech, daughter of John Dietrich and Ann Klassen. According to the birth record she was born at Green Bay but it is more likely that she was born on the family farm at Town of Lawrence.
She grew up on her parents' farm in the Town of Lawrence. In 1879, she moved to Stanton Precinct, Fillmore County, Nebraska where three of her brothers intended to establish homesteads.
On 1 April 1880, she sold her one-eight interest in her deceased parents' 51-acre tract in Town of Lawrence to her brother Mathias for $133.33. See Brown County Deed Book 42, p 318. On 12 April 1880, "Mary Diederich of Fillmore County, Nebraska" sold her one-eight interest in the remainder of the estate to Peter, John and Antoon Keyzers for $150. See Brown County Deed Book 42, p 311.
In the June 1880 Census of Nebraska, p 520C, she is recorded as living in her brother John's household. Her brothers Antone and Joseph and their families were nearby neighbors. John and Antone Diederich returned to Brown County, Wisconsin in 1881 but she and her brother Joseph remained in Fillmore County, Nebraska.
She and her husband evidently lived at or near Geneva, the county seat of Fillmore County, after their marriage. In 1894, they established a 160 acre homestead in the Northwest 1/4 of Section 22, Town 24 North, Range 8 West of the Indian principal Meridian in Cheohee Township, Garfield County, Oklahoma Territory, three miles west and one mile south of the present town of Hilsdale. Two years later, LeRoy Oscar Kerns died. His brief obituary was published Wednesday 24 February 1897 in the Enid Daily Wave, p 3:
Mr. L. O. Kerns, who lived with his family, consisting of a wife and four children, ranging from 12 to 3 years old, on the northwest 22-24-8, in Cheochee township, died Saturday evening at 5 o'clock, of ulceration of the stomach, after a few days of intense suffering. He was 41 years of age; was buried in the Coldwater church cemetery.
Mary Ann Diederich Kerns evidently raised her family on the homestead, remaining there until 1925 when she moved to Hugoton, Kansas to live with her son Earl John Kerns. The latest plat book of Garfield County shows that Ira L. Swan, a grandson, currently owns the quarter-section homestead.
When she died, The Hugoton Hermes of Friday 27 August 1937 reported:
Mrs. M. A. Kerns died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. M. Swan in this city at 5:50 Wednesday morning, at the age of 84-1/2 years. Mrs. Kerns moved to Stevens County in 1925. For a long time she made her home with her son Earl, but of late she has been with her daughter. She leaves two sons and two daughter: Howard Kerns, of Greeley, Colorado, Mrs. Allie Hooker of South Gate, California, Mrs. R. M. Swan and Sheriff Earl Kerns of Hugoton. At this writing funeral arrangements have not been made.
Her obituary in the Hugoton Hermes of 3 September 1937 states:
Mary Ann Diederick was born January 20, 1853, at De Pere (sic), Wisconsin, and departed this life August 25, 1937, at the age of 84 years , 7 months and 5 days.
She was united in marriage to LeRoy Oscar Kerns of Geneva, Nebraska, June 16, 1884. To this union four children were born of which three are living. Her husband and a son preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her loss four children: Howard A. Kerns, stepson of Greeley, Colorado, Allie Hooker of South Gate, California, Earl Kerns, Hugoton, Kansas, and Mrs. Roy Swan, Hugoton, Kansas.
She leaves seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren besides a host of friends.
The funeral services were held at the Christian church, Thursday of last week, W. D. Darnall delivering the funeral address. Prine Funeral Home was in charge of the burial.

Although her death certificate, obituary and gravestone give her birthdate as 20 January 1853, her birth certificate says 20 January 1851 and that is probably correct. Her death certificate (Kansas Death Certificates, v 95, p 595) tells when and where she died and is buried.

Antone5 Diederich (John4, Johann Nicolaus3, Cornelius2, Peter1) was born 15 May 1853 at Town of Lawrence, Brown County, Wisconsin, the son of John and Anna (Clasen) Diederich. He was the fourth child born in Wisconsin after his parents migrated from Germany. There is no record of his birth in Brown County records.
He died Saturday 16 February 1935, age almost 82, of _________ at St. Vincent hospital, Green Bay, Brown County. According to his obituary, funeral services were conducted Monday 19 February in St. Benedict's Catholic church, Suamico, Brown County, which he had helped organize about 1918. A solemn high mass was sung by the Reverend M. Marmurowicz, pastor, assisted by a Norbertine priest as deacon and Frater Alphonsus Diederich, his son, a sub-deacon. He is buried in St. Benedict's cemetery at Suamico. Antone Diederich's death certificate tells when and where he was born and died. See Brown County death records, v 36, p 551.

Mary Klipstein was born 13 August 1861 at Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Martin H_____ and Frederica ______ (Schubing) Klipstein. Her birth is recorded in ___________ County birth records, v ___, p ___.
She died 25 September 1939, age 78, of diabetes at Saumico. The funeral was held _____________________ at _________________ church, __________, and she is buried in St. Benedict's cemetery there. Her death certificate says she was born 13 September 1861 and died 25 September 1939, age 78 years, 1 month and 10 days. See Brown County death records, v 40, p 921. Obviously, either the birthdate or age at death is incorrect. According to the Reverend A. F. Diederich, her son, she was born 13 August 1861. Also, according to her death certificate, mother's name was Mary Rodatz but her father's death certificate says his wife's name was Frederica Schubing.
The marriage of Anthony Dideriks (sic) and Mary Klipstein is recorded in Brown County marriage records, v 9, p 104. His parents' names are given as Johann Dideriks and Gerdrudis Tonon and her parents' names are given as Martin Klipstein and Frederica Klipstein. Witnesses were Martin Dideriks and Bernardina Klipstein. Sixteenth January 1880 marriage was contracted by Antone Diedericks, age 26, son of John Diedericks and Gertrude Anna, born at De Pere, and Maria Klipstein, daughter of Martin Klipstein and Frederica Klipsten, Bernardina Klipstein and I were present.
Martin Klipstein was a farmer. He evidently migrated to the United States about 1860 because his daughter Bertha was born in Germany in 1859 and his daughter Mary in Milwaukee in 1861. In the 1870 Census of Wisconsin, he is recorded in the Town of Lawrence, Brown County, as follows:

The Klipstein and Diederich farms were across the road (now County Trunk EE) from one another in Town of Lawrence. In 1968, the Klipstein farm was still held in the Klipstein family.
When Antone's father John died 18 August 1874, he apparently did not leave a will. Thus his property passed into the hands of his nine children. His widow received a dower interest in the homestead.
Michael Diederich was killed 20 November 1876 by a train while walking on the railroad tracks in West De Pere. Since he was unmarried and without children, the eight surviving children inherited his share of their father's estate.
On 1 October 1878, Antone Diederich and Peter Karst bought the widow's dower interests for $1,333.34. See Brown County Deed 31-609. That same day, Antone's sister "Gertrude Gates and Philip Gates, her husband" sold their one-eighth share in the estate to Antone Diederich and Peter Karst for $63.26. See Brown County Deed 31-608.
On 5 March 1879, "Joseph Diedrich and Anna Diedrich, his wife" sold their share to Anton Deidrich (sic) and Peter Karst for $1. See Brown County Deed 40-343.
On 14 July 1879, "John Deidrich and Cecilia Deidrich, his wife" sold their share to Anton Deidrich (sic) and Peter Karst for $150. See Brown County Deed 39-95.
The reason for the substantial difference in the amount of money each received is not known. Perhaps there was some other consideration involved which is not mentioned in the deeds.
On 10 March 1880, "Pete Karst and Katherine Karst, his wife, of the Town of Lawrence" conveyed the interest previously conveyed by Anna Diederich to Anton Diederich for $125. See Brown County Deed 39-208.
Then on 1 April 1880, "Antoon Diederich and Mary Diederich, his wife, Mathias Diederich (unmarried), Theresia Pennings (nee Diederich) and John Pennings, her husband," sold an undivided six-eights interest in the homestead and a 74.75-acre tract east of De Pere to Peter, John and Antoon Keyzers for $900. See Brown County Deed 42-294. "Mary Diederich of Fillmore County, Nebraska" sold her one-eighth interest in these properties to the Keyzers on 12 April 1880 for $150. See Brown County Deed 42-311. Pete Didrich (sic) of Miles City, Custer County, Montana Territory" sold his one-eighth interest to the Keyzers on 19 June 1881 for $464.89. See Brown County Deed 42-459.
Also on 1 April 1880, "Antoon Diederich & Mary Diederich, his wife, Theresia Pennings (Nee Diederich), John Pennings, her husband, and Mary Diederich, Unmarried," sold their six-eighths interest in a 51-acre tract to their brother Mathias Diederich of de Pere for $800. See Brown County Deed 42-318.
Antone, his wife and their infant daughter probably moved soon thereafter to Stanton Precinct, Fillmore County, Nebraska where his brothers Joseph and John, and sister Mary Ann, had already moved. In the June 1880 Census of Nebraska, p 520B, he is recorded as Antonio Diederich, farmer. His homestead was next to his brother Joseph's and one farm removed from his brother John, with whom his sister Mary Ann was living. But evidently he did not stay long for on 9 July 1881, "Mathias Diedrich of Brown County, Wisconsin" sold the six-eighths interest in the 51-acre tract back to his brother "Antoon Deidrich of the same county" for $800. See Brown County Deed 43-556. On 26 August 1882, 'Antoon Deidrich and Mary Deidrich his wife of Brown County, Wisconsin" sold their interest in the tract to William Michaelis for $1,100. See Brown County Deed 47-239.
During the ensuing years, Antone Diederich evidently lived in various parts of Brown County for the birth records of his children include Nicollet, West De Pere, Ashwaubenon and West De Pere. His son Ralph Leo Diederich was born at Rudolph, Wood County, Wisconsin in 1902. Antone's obituary says he also "farmed in the Dakotas" but this may have been before his marriage. He settled at Suamico about 1915, according to his obituary.

Ralph Leo and Mary Agnes (Martin) Diederich were killed in an automobile accident 14 August 1968 at Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin and are buried in St. Benedict's cemetery at Suamico, Brown County, Wisconsin.
Ralph's parents moved to Suamico about 1915, when he was 13 years old. In 1928, Ralph moved to Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was an executive in the grocery business there for 29 years.
In 1956, he moved to West De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin and acquired an interest in the American Motors dealership at Green Bay. He operated this business until his death. The Diederichs resided at 57 Lost Dauphin Road, West De Pere.
On the morning of 14 August 1968, the Diederichs left West De Pere for Albany, Wisconsin to get a new auto for a customer and planned to return that day. They were traveling south on U.S. highway 15, toward Waupun when they were struck by an oncoming car driven by Mrs. Helen A. Johnson of Portage, Wisconsin. Mrs. Johnson, who was also killed in the head on collision, had just passed a truck when she swerved into the Diederich's lane.
The funeral was held 17 August at St. Joseph Shrine at West De Pere. Rev. Alphonsus Francis Charles Diederich, Ralph's brother, said the mass.

J. William Diederich grew up in Ladysmith, Bloomer, and Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. He
graduated from Marquette University at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1951 with a Ph.B. degree in
Journalism and from the Harvard Business School at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1955, with an
MBA degree with high distinction. He was an instructor at Boston University in 1954, and
at Old Dominion University at Norfolk, Virginia, from 1955 to 1959.
On November 25, 1950, Mr. Diederich married Mary Theresa Klein, daughter of Joseph
Ferdinand and Lorraine Marcella (Hubing) Klein of Port Washington, Wisconsin. The couple
had 14 children, one of whom died in infancy.
Upon graduation from Harvard, Mr. Diederich joined Landmark Communications, Inc., of Norfolk, Virginia,
as research
director. He became assistant controller in 1959, controller
in 1962, secretary/treasurer in 1963, vice-president and treasurer in 1965, executive
vp-finance in 1973, executive vp-community newspapers in 1978, and executive vp and chief
financial officer in 1982. When Landmark entered the cable television business in 1962, he
became its first general manager and managed the new business until 1964. He also served
as chairman of Landmark Community Newspapers, Inc., from 1977 to 1988. He founded
Executive Productivity Systems, Inc., a computer and software distributor, in 1982 and
served as its president until 1988. He retired from Landmark Communications in 1990 but
continued to serve as a director of Landmark Communications, Inc., TeleCable Corporation,
Trader Publishing Company, and the Landmark Foundation until 1995. He also served as an
officer of several of Landmark's Nevada-based companies. He served as president and a
director of LCI Credit Corp. from 1991 to 1993, and of Landmark Television, Inc., and LTM Investments,
Inc., from 1991 to 2006. He also served as a consultant to KLAS-TV of Las Vegas, NV.
After retirement, he was active as a financial consultant, private investor, and
Internet entrepreneur. In 1994, he and his brother, Fran, and Fran's wife, Shirley,
founded Internet Express, Inc., an Internet access provider at Madison, Wisconsin, which they later sold. He
founded Wide World Web International in 1995 and was chairman and chief
executive officer until his death, active in consulting and publishing genealogical websites.
Mr. Diederich served on active duty in the USMC from 1951 to 1953 and retired from the
Marine Corps reserve in 1971 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a member of Sons
of the American Revolution, National Association of Accountants, Society of Professional
Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi, American Numismatic Association, and the National, Wisconsin,
and Pennsylvania Genealogical Societies. He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
John William Diederich died 27 March 2006 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Funeral masses were held
at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia and at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church
in Port Washington, Wisconsin where he had married 50 years previously. He is buried at St. Mary's Catholic
Cemetery in Port Washington, Wisconsin with his wife's wedding ring, a symbol of the steadfast and faithful
love they had for each other during their 55 years of marriage.
Mary Theresa grew up in Port Washington, Wisconsin, the oldest of four children. She attended Catholic school
and told stories of work in a variety of jobs, such as picking beans for the canning factory and working in a
chair factory, first doing upholstry, then later working in the front office. During the Great Depression her
father leased a field to help provide income for a Farmer's widow, and he grew strawberries there. On the
weekends the family would go and pick the strawberries and sell them in town to raise extra money. Her favorite
job was working in a bakery shop, and she left only to help take care of her mother who was wheelchair bound for
several years due to arthritis.
After high school graduation Mary attended Marquette University in Milwaukee where she and and Mr. Diederich met. After
they married, she left school and their first child was born at Quantico, Virginia during Mr. Diederich's active
duty service there. She worked to help support the family while Mr. Diederich attended Harvard, pausing only for
the birth of their third child.
After they settled in Norfolk, Virginia, Mary began taking classes at what is now Old Dominion University and
she graduated at the age of forty with a degree in English before the birth of her fourteenth child at age forty-one.
She had also taken viola lessons and enjoyed playing, eventually joining the Virginia Beach Community orchestra group.
Mary was active in her community and church, visiting elderly friends and teaching religious education classes.
She later took singing lessons and joined the church choir.
After retirement, the Diederichs relocated to Incline Village, Nevada and she stayed active in the church,
teaching classes and helping to start a choir group there. She also played for the Carson City Community Orchestra
until failing health forced her to retire.
Mr. and Mrs. Diederich were listed in the 2005 Slate 60: The 60 largest American charitable contributions
of the year for a contribution to Marquette University to benefit the school of Communications.

Allen Gregory Lanke was born 14 August 1935 at Prairie du Chien, Crawford County, Wisconsin, the son of Lawrence Charles and Helen Vivian (Allen) Lanke.
He married Mary Alice Diederich 24 October 1959 at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church at 2474 North 37th Street, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Reverend _________________ presided. Witnesses were Richard Eugene Lanke and Mary Steinmetz Miller.
She was born 6 March 1936 at Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Joseph Charles and Alice Florence (Yost) Diederich.
Al enlisted in the United States Navy at Prairie du Chien at the age of 18 and served for four years, from October 1953 to October 1957.
He attended boot camp at the United States Naval Training Center at San Diego, San Diego County, California. He was then transferred to flight school at Norman, Oklahoma, for six weeks. After flight training, he was sent to the Naval Aviation Electrician's School at Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida, for about 16 weeks. He was then assigned to a Navy fighter squadron, VF-152, aboard the U.S.S Antietam, which he joined in the Philippines. After completing a cruise to the far east, the Antietam returned to the Naval Station at Alameda, California, and the squadron returned to Moffitt Field.
The squadron was then ordered aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown for 14 months, during which it cruised to Hawaii, Wake Island, Guam, the Philipines, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Australia. The squadron returned to Moffitt Field for about a month and was then ordered aboard the U.S.S. Wasp for about a 12-month deployment, which took it to the same places in the far east.
Allen was discharged in October 1957 as an electricians' mate Second Class. He had been promoted to First Class but did not have sufficient time in grade and reverted.
After he was discharged from the Navy, he joined the Ladish Company at Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, in the apprentice training program. He worked at Ladish until July 1964. Then he went to work for A. Behling Company at 6734 West Wells Street, Wauwatosa, Milwaukee County. He took over the electrical department at Behling in 1969, when Armand Behling died. He left the A. Behling Company in 1974 to set up his own business, Lanke Electric Company. He is now an electrical contractor in Plover, Wisconsin.
Mary Alice Diederich was graduated from McDonnell Memorial High School at Chippewa Falls, Chippewa County, in June 1954. She then attended Eau Claire Vocational School, where she received secretarial training from September 1954 to February 1955.
Her first job was as secretary with National Farm Loan at Chippewa Falls from March 1955 till February 1957.
She moved to Milwaukee in February 1957 to work for Marquette Cement Manufacturing Company at 2040 West Wisconsin Avenue. She started as a secretary but became bookkeeper in May 1957. She left Marquette Cement Manufacturing Company in March 1960, shortly before Robert's birth. Thereafter, she was a housewife, until Allen started his own business, and then she kept the books. After moving to Plover in 1984, she went back to work at the Maryvonne Clothing Store.
After their marriage, the Lanke's resided at 2416 South 52nd Street in West Allis for six months and at 2646 South 69th Street in Milwaukee for four years. They rented a home at 160 North 70th Street in Milwaukee in June 1964 and bought it in the fall of 1967. In March 1984, they decided to move from Milwaukee to Plover, Portage County, Wisconsin.
